Breast Feeding

Breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure a child’s health which is safe, clean, and contains antibodies that help protect against many common childhood illnesses. Breast milk provides all the energy and nutrients that the infant needs for the first months of life, and it continues to provide up to 6 or more months. After 6 months of age, one can start with vegetables, grains, fruits, proteins along with breast milk.

The below overview can give you a clear idea about breastfeeding and uses.

What Are the Benefits of Breastfeeding for Your Baby?

Breast milk is a perfect combination of vitamins, protein, and fat – everything your baby needs to grow stronger and healthier. It also contains antibodies that help your baby fight against viruses and bacteria. Breastfeeding for the first 6 months is very essential because it provides all the necessary nutrition in an easily digested form. Also, lowers the risk of having asthma, allergies, respiratory illness, or any kind of infection. They also have fewer hospitalizations and trips to the doctor.

Are there any benefits of breastfeeding for the mother?

Breastfeeding releases the hormone called oxytocin, which helps the uterus to return to its actual size and helps to reduce uterine bleeding after birth. It also helps you to lose pregnancy weight faster. Breastfeeding may lower the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and also osteoporosis.

Will I be able to produce enough milk to breastfeed?

During the first few days after birth, breasts produce thick, yellowish, scant “first milk” which is called colostrum. Generated colostrum is plenty to meet the baby’s nutritional needs which helps the baby’s digestive tract to digest breast milk. As your baby needs more milk, your breasts respond to the need by producing more milk.

What's the Best Position for Breastfeeding?

There is no exact position specified for breastfeeding, the best position is the one where you and your baby both are comfortable and relaxed. Here are some common positions for breastfeeding your baby:

1. Cradle position – most common position to hold your baby so she feels fully supported

2. Football position – It’s a good position for those who are recovering from a cesarian birth and need to protect belly from the pressure and weight.

3. Side-lying position – This position is great for night feeding in bed.

Are There any Medical Considerations While Breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding can cause your baby harm if,

1. You are positive to HIV, If breastfeed, the virus can pass to your infant.

2. You have active tuberculosis.

3. You are receiving chemotherapy for cancer.

4. You are using drugs like cocaine or marijuana, or drugs for migraine headaches, Parkinson’s disease.
